If you're going to San Francisco...

Discover the city of San Francisco through this video. Hope you will enjoy it.

CMYK City - San Francisco
SF Fun Cheap

- Dueling Pianos at Johnny Foleys : 243 O'Farrell Street.

A visiter:

Ice cream:

- Smitten Ice cream : 432 Octavia street.

Shopping:

- Azil boutique : 451 Hayes Street.

- Mad dog in the Fog : 530 Haight Street.

Mission district / Dolores Park

- Salt house : 545 Mission Street - Taqueria cancun : 2288 Mission Street

SOMA

DSC_0237

A visiter :

"Dear San Francisco, New York may be The City That Never Sleeps, but you are the City That Knows How. ‘How’ to do what? Well – everything. You are the city that knows how to have fun, how to embrace diversity, how to recover from adversity, and how to create products that the world didn’t know it needed. Your talents are countless but I didn’t realize much of this right away. I was smitten by your light, your taste and your variety before I knew about your other qualities, and I suspect that I still haven’t discovered them all. Fortunately, I have a lifetime to find out about them..." Lire la suite

English version

I’m gonna write everything I can about my 6 months journey I spent in San Francisco. It was one year and a half ago, from september until march 2013. So, to start properly, you have to know that I chose San Francisco because I’ve been a big Fan of the USA since I was a toddler. This came from my father. He’s a huge fan of american TV Shows and movies and he used to let me watch everything with him. I always wanted to have best friends like the TV show Friends… So when I decided to move, the US was the first destination on my list. It was a little dream I had. I wanted to go to the other side of the world!

I started to travel quite late, when I was at the university. It was always little travels of a few days or long week-ends and always in Europe. And I always had this feeling that I wanted to go further, in another country far away. I left my hometown Ajaccio (a little city in Corsica, an island in the South of France) for Aix-en-Provence, also a little city, then Paris and to finish SAN FRANCISCO. The streets going up and down, the huge and beautiful Golden Gate Bridge, the cable car, and gosh California! Surf, skate, sun, positive mind, good weather… everything I wanted! I had been thinking about it since a long time, but you know, it’s always complicated to take big decision like this! You’re afraid to make a mistake, so I had to prepare myself and think about it seriously... and then you realize that you want to go, put away everything and you take your decision! Like I want to go there, I want to live this experience! There is never a “good time” when everything is going your way, everybody will be afraid for you, your family, your friends, it’s normal you know it’s because they love you. But don’t let other people’s fears become your fears. Everyone has their personality and nobody will live this experience for you! Keep this in mind. But if I can tell you something, you’ll never regret your experience, NEVER! It’s such a good adventure, it’ll let you learn more about yourself, who you are and, the most important it’ll make you richer than before!

So I planned my travel alone, I wanted to do everything by myself, just because I wanted to prove to myself that I was good enough to do it. And you know It’s like little challenge in your life, like “If I can do this, I can do anything”. I’m pretty much like this sometimes. So for those who would like to go away for a long time or just want to take holidays in the west coast… I’ll tell you almost everything about my trip!

Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, California

Schools

There are a lot of english schools in San Francisco, and it’s really hard to compare them when you haven’t tried them. So when I planned my journey and asked around people who had an experience like this to get more informations, I learned that some international schools were good in one city and bad in an other one… So it doesn’t really help! So as it is pretty expensive, you don’t want to miss it! I had 2 of my friends in San Francisco when I was looking for my school and they told me that theirs was so great! I trusted them and I took it: Intrax English Institute. I couldn’t be happier to be there, all the teachers were so nice, the school is in a new place so everything is new, it’s in a building near Embarcadero. So I’ll tell everyone to go there if they want to go to San Francisco to learn english. When you arrive you have to take an exam to let the school know which level you have in english, after that you integrate the level you belong in. When you are in a level, for example the 4, the session in a level is 8 or 9 weeks to complete it. But if after 3 weeks you think you can go in the level up, you can take a test to try it. If it’s good you go to the level up, if not you have to finish the session and take the test with everyone at the end of the session. It’s a pretty good system because you are not stuck in a level if you don’t feel comfortable, and the teachers are really available if you want to talk with them. They will know who you are so fast even if the school has plenty of students. It’s important when you are far away from your home to have a space where you feel a little bit at home.

NB: The school is also in San Diego and Chicago. So if you want to, you can stay 3 months in San Francisco and after 3 months in Chicago. It’s possible! If you want to discover another city or something else. The price is the same, you’ll just have to move yourself to the other city :) that’s it! Pretty cool right?

Sunset, Russian Hill, San Francisco, California.

Internship

I couldn’t be an intern back in San Francisco because I didn’t stay there long enough. But the school is really well prepared to help you find one. It’s really flexible and someone will help you write your resume, to find a job you’ll like, and everything you’ll have to do. And a professional experience in a foreign country will shine on your resume!

Also, the watchword at school is “ONLY ENGLISH” and everyone respects it. You’ll be with different nationalities so if you don’t speak english that well you’ll quickly feel frustrated because words are missing. But even if it’s hard everybody tries to communicate in english even if someone talks the same native language. And it puts everyone in a good mood because everyone can understand and/or tries to. They also have a good way to reward you by giving you a good point if you speak english at school (out of the class). And when you have 5 good points, you can have a gift! Ok you feel like a child, but I can tell you that when I got mine for the first time I was pretty proud of myself ahaha!

If you have to make a choice, I’ll tell you to go to the Intrax school of  Saint Giles. Some of friends I met in San Francisco were at this school and it’s a good one. Some others friends changed schools during the year because it wasn’t as good as they thought. So I know it’s a lot of money and an investment for the future so I’ll talk about my experience in those two schools.

Housing

So… find a place… It’s a big piece of cake! When I left France, I was thinking I’ll find roommates. Like real californian, roommates like “Friends” and stay there forever and ever with my new friends skating, surfing, … be a real californian girl! Long blond hair, my skate under my arm and going to the school like this ;) Yes I know… it’s a little bit too much but you have to know that I can surf now! Yes, really! But let’s go back to the real subject. So I was going to San Francisco just for 6 months so it wasn’t enough I think to find it… But at the beginning I didn’t know that.

Rent

For renting, I’ll give you this website: craiglist. They use it all the time for almost everything: rent, housing, job, etc. The ergonomics of the website isn’t really brilliant, it’s necessary to search but you can find many things. My research for roommates didn’t really bear fruit … The rents of rooms in apartments were really very expensive, more than $1 000/month for an empty room! As I was there for only 6 months and because I had rented a room in a residence for 1 month I didn’t really want to furnish a room for 5 months but well it’s possible. It’s necessary to know the districts to be able to choose and not make a mistake :) but you can do it and I think that it is an experience which can be very rich! When you are in an apartment you feel quickly at home and more easily get its bearings. Even if San Francisco welcomes you!

Sunset, Twin Peaks, San Francisco, California.

Residence

So for me, I rather opted for a residence, there also the school gave me several options: some with apartments to be shared, other one with simple or double rooms, etc. But be aware! Announcements on the localization are very very very deceitful! Finally no one warns you that in San Francisco, from one street to the next it can become a little “dangerous”. And that the Tenderloin district was not really respectable! I chose my residence a little bit at random I have to say … Because I didn’t know districts, I told myself well I’m not going to take the cheapest but not the most expensive either. I had 3 choices and I chose the “average” residence. The same group which was called Vantaggio had 3 different residences. Today, the residence Vantaggio Cosmo doesn’t exist anymore. For the other one, when I was there: Turk street, you don’t feel so comfortable in the district so even for a guy I wouldn’t advise you to there, same for the O’Farrell Vantaggio. I saw a new one on the website but the district isn’t so good either. The one where I was has been acquired. So, I only lived at the Vantaggio in Turk Street for one month (I was thinking it would be enough time to find a rental) … It has been a special experience, but in the wrong way. If you’re going to San Francisco, don’t take Turk Street. There is nothing special inside and you won’t feel comfortable, especially at night and alone. I want to be specific, nobody ever stopped me on the street or bothered me. And in general it never happened. But it’s the street and the district of the homeless and some junkies, they are not aggressive, nobody ever asked me anything like it happens to me so many times in Paris and in every district. But if you don’t need to take this street, don’t take it. It’s not a dangerous city, compared to Paris where I lived during 3 years, I can tell you that San Francisco is so much more pleasant!

Finally at the end of my first month (yes I survived) I went to the Vantaggio Cosmo. A lot of my classmates and friends were there. It was the top of the range version of the residence (of the Vantaggio company of course). Well not especially super but the street was nice, another residence of the same kind was down the street and there were quite a lot of restaurants / bars in the surroundings, the public transportation nearby which served the city well it was a good deal.

NB : It is necessary to be wary of pictures you’ll find on web sites. On the website of Vantaggio Cosmo it showed an available fitness gym in the residence for example… Actually it existed but practically no machine worked normally! Well, they already knew at this time that few months later it would be sold. So it didn’t help for the renovation and nobody told us this information before we arrived.

Good deals

For your informations, you’ll find below some links to others residence / flat of the same kind (short and long time):

- USA Hostel:It’s the hostel which is a few meters away from Vantaggio Cosmo – very nice, the team is great welcoming and common areas are very cool: attractive kitchen, table football, cinema, laundry, etc. Everything is recent and in good condition. I think that rooms are a little bit smaller compared with the Vantaggio cosmo but nothing very shocking or disturbing :) The only problem which I found is that many French people lived there … So to meet foreigners to speak English it’s a little more complicated, even if other ways exist, naturally!

- Spaulding Hotel: I also heard good feedbacks about this residence but I didn’t have the opportunity to visit rooms. Placed well, at Union Square and just next to Market Street.

- Fillmore Center: It’s not an hostel but a residence including several types of apartments and studios. It’s very nice and pleasant! I had the opportunity to visit several, often apartments rented by 4 people, it’s very well organized and modern. I think that it’s a very good deal if you plan to live in San Francisco for a long period. I missed having no true home a little during these 6 months, after a while that is a little lacking… I think that all the apartments are furnished or semi-furnished so you just have to put down your suitcases :)

When You should go there?

Sunset at Alcatraz, San Francisco, California.

Then I stayed in San Francisco September to Mars and personally I have needed neither big jacket, or glove! The weather is always constant, it’s always middle-season! I will recommend you to go there in September-October. Why not for an event?! Halloween for example! The Americans are crazy about this and me too! There are short-lived stores which grow almost everywhere in the city to sell decorations and dress up, it’s perfect! Otherwise, the weather is rather clement (temperatures high enough), there is often an Indian summer, so it’s very good in September October more than in July August in San Francisco. And then you will have maybe the opportunity to see all the Golden Gate Bridge during your journey. Hope the fog will let you see it integrally ;)

City guide

Here is the small summary of the places that I tested during my journey in San Francisco and I hope you’re gonna like it. I used to search often on websites to find small and nice restaurants, also in guides and when I walked and strolled on the streets and simply see a place I liked and make a stop. So this is what I would call my discoveries, classified by district but also the list of things to be tested when you are in San Francisco!

The first tips I can give you is to walk, walk in every street, get lost, enter the restaurant you see and you like, talk to people, make friend…! Let yourself live with the city. Don’t visit San Francisco like the other city with the tourist place, be lost in San Francisco, it’s full of surprises!

First of all, I recommend you to check those websites which include the various events which take place in the city all year round: concerts, celebrate, evenings, etc. etc. There is somethings to do every day in San Francisco so don’t hesitate to go there often. For low budgets and the others it’s also interesting because there is often information on reductions available.

I’ll recommend this for sure.

And also a good place to find some cupcakes in the basement.

On Powell Street you’ll find some shops to buy caps from american teams: basketball, baseball, …

Embarcadero

Embarcadero, San Francisco, California

Embarcadero is the port of San Francisco. With an amazing view of the bay bridge… I know with the Golden Gate Bridge we finally totally forgot this one. But it’s the one who will let you go to Berkley and Oakland :) So not so bad! And it’s less famous but it’s beautiful also. People are running through the road Embarcadero to Fisherman’s wharf. Californian likes sport and healthy life ;)

Near the Ferry Building, walk away until the end to see the view from the Ocean to the city!

To eat:

- Ferry Building : At the beginning of Market street, near the Bay Bridge. You’ll find inside so many different restaurants, shops… All the ones I tested were pretty good. It’s healthy with good products! During the winter there is an ice skating rink near, you’ll do it with a view of the bay. And also, if you’re going there during the Christmas period, make a stop to the Hyatt Regency Hotel who had the most beautiful and magic christmas decoration!

- Tommaso’s: 1042 kearny street. The oldest italian restaurant.

To visit:

- The Coit tower with a great view of San Francisco and the streets up and down
- The beat museum, if you read "The road" you'll like to make a stop

Shopping:

- Azil boutique : 451 hayes street. A little shop with great jewelries.

Marina District

Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, California.

It’s the “richer” district and the flat one ;) Created after the earthquake with the junk of it, it’s the reason why it is so flat compared to the rest of the city. You’ll see beautiful houses, so different and great.

To move your body (or to sing):

- Silver Clouds: 1994 lombard street (corner with Webster Street). It's a karaoke super fun! Again like the movie! I spent a night there it was so great! Test it if you can!

Shopping :

- Fawn: 3108 Fillmore Street between Filbert and Pixley, jewelries, clothes,... some good stuffs in a cute places.

Haight-ashbury / Castro

Sunset, Castro District, San Francisco, California.

So this is the big part ahaha! My really best and favorite district: Lower Haight. It’s where I spent most of my time, walking, chilling, partying, and simply having fun! Maybe the craziest people are over there and it’s the reason why I liked it so much!

SO, Castro to see naked men walking totally relax, crazy stuffs everywhere! Also, for some history check out the Harvey Milk Space at the beginning of the street.

Haight Ashbury also for the history, it’s where the hippie movement begging, like Castro where the gay movement begin. And you’ll say I’m cray (maybe it’s right) but you can feel it! You can feel with the ambiance of people, district, everything like everything can start in San Francisco. So ok I’m totally in love with this city but hope you’ll feel the same, because it’s all good!

To eat:

- Café international: At the corner of Haight and Fillmore Street. My favorite place, to work, to chill, to listen music, to eat cake, drink smoothie, to do everything. The woman who work there is a big personality, she speaks several languages and if she likes you she will recognize you and your taste pretty easily. The sun comes through the place, it’s the best place to chill out. Test the middle east plate, a quiche, a cookie warmed and a smoothie.
- Café du soleil: At the corner of Fillmore and Waller Street. The terrace is all day long full of sun! It's great to make a stop and eat there for lunch. It's a french restaurant by the way.
- Samovar lounge: 498 Sanchez Street, a great place for the brunch.

- Bisou: 2367 Market Street, french gay restaurant for the brunch it's so good. And don't hesitate to take some mimosa drink!

Shopping:

- D-structure: Haight street (almost at the corner with Fillmore street). It's a store which sells at the same time clothes and exposes artists. Middle art gallery - middle shop. You'll find original shirts for boys and attractive things for girls there.

- Loved to death: 1681 haight street, with some curiosity and strange stuffs. Really fun.

I end with a great letter which was drafted by a girl who lives in San Francisco, she retranscribes exactly what I felt when I was there:

"Dear San Francisco,

New York may be The City That Never Sleeps, but you are the City That Knows How. Fortunately, I have a lifetime to find out about them.Read more
